"I have often asked myself: why does Anna-Eva Bergman use metal foils in her painting? And probably many with me. Isn't there something too obviously jewelery-like, over-refined adhering to? Only when you have sat in front of a wall day after day with her pictures it is that the secret of her metal foil technique is revealed to one with full force. You can sit a whole day and notice how the pictures change character with the light, yes, how the light is created in these pictures, how they become luminescent. The variety of metal foils she uses - silver, gold, aluminum, copper, brass and other alloys - polychrome effects, but her under- and overlays, abrasions and embossing of the base of the metal foils create a feeling of space and often dramatic effects.
